weekend round-up

If we had to sum up this past weekend in one word it would be "rain." Add some more rain on top of that rain and throw in another day of rain and you'd be somewhere in the ballpark. It rained this weekend. Every day. All day. As a result, we stayed in. We were also puppy-sitting for our friend Amy so the weekend thankfully warranted sticking close to home.

Friday was Marc's birthday so we kicked with Milo, our canine house guest, made a really late supper and drank a lovely, lovely bottle of wine. Fairly low-key as birthdays go but with all the travelling Marc's done the last little bit, it was kinda nice to stay in. On the birthday present list for this year, some great cufflinks for my husband who loves all things French-cuffed. These ones from QA Create made from vintage typewriter keys and these silver handmade ones from LeeLoo Studio

Saturday, it rained some more so we ran some errands with Milo and rented some movies in the "if you can't beat'em join'em" mentality of the weekend. Choices: The Savages starring 2 of my favourite actors Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. This movie is outstanding. It's sad and touching, scary and familiar all at the same time. So good. Rocket Science which wasn't as good as I was hoping but still pretty good. A bit Rushmore meets Napoleon Dynamite. The best part of this movie is Steve Park as Judge Peet. He played Mike Yamagita in Fargo, one of my all-time favourite movies, and is brilliant. This role is ultimately the same role but hey, it was funny for me the first time and guess what? It was still funny this time. Lastly, Death at a Funeral which was a hilariously funny British comedy centered around, surprise, a funeral. All excellent rainy weekend choices.

Sunday, more rain-forced house exile and the sad time for Milo to go home. He was an ideal houseguest being both over-the-top adorable and perfectly obedient. Of course, I took a bunch of photos of Milo in all his cuteness.

The one good thing that came out of a rainy weekend was giving in to the desire for comfort food which for me means using my slow cooker. Sunday we busted out one of my old-time family faves Sweet and Sour Any Kind of Meat. I've blogged about it before and it's truly yummy.
