luggage love

Over on PoppyTalk today there was a post about this brilliant luggage from Streamline Luggage. Every self-respecting woman has a thing for fancy vintage-inspired luggage and this is it but with all the comforts a modern woman has come to expect, luggage-wise anyway.

These are the Editor Series options and while they're stupendous, the Aviator Series in yellow might be my fave. Not to mention the pics for a more manly traveller - holy classy. Alas I can't steal pics off their fancy website so these will have to do.

Talk about feeling exotic at the airport...

perfection

The more pictures I see of Marisa Tomei and her incredible Versace dress for the Oscars the more I love it. Seriously, all those pleats - I can't even begin to fathom how long this dress took to make or what a nightmare it must have been to make alterations to it. I almost wanted her to win the Oscar just so I could see the dress move across the stage. It's truly a work of art and easily my favourite of the whole night.

green for the love of god

Winter just keeps coming and coming and coming here in my neck of the woods and I'm beyond done with it.  All I've been thinking about lately is this spot where I was sitting 7 months ago.

kittens inspired by kittens

This cracks me up to no end. First off, if I was her age and had today's technology at my fingertips, I likely would have made a similar video. Second, I think my niece Emily is also capable of similar cuteness.   As is Sophie, our friend's daughter who I suspect is secretly 23 years old.

Seriously worth the whole watch. I think the kitty screaming faces are my favourite...

ewwwwwWWWWWWWW...........

I suppose it was only a matter of time. The Pussycat Dolls are releasing their take on the Oscar-winning song "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire. Super-producer Ron Fair (who's worked with Fergie and Christina Aguilera) produced the lead vocals by Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger, whose voice blends with that of composer A.R. Rahman.

weekend round-up

Yay for the weekend!!! Since this week was my first attempt at a full 9-5 work week at 4 weeks post-op, it really goes without saying that I am tired. I am super mega-tired. This weekend is a perfect weekend for seeing the final onslaught of Oscar movies before Sunday - a lovely surprise for me because I really didn't think any more of them were going to come to our theatre. So I will need to chat a bit about some alterations to my Oscar rant of last week.

We kicked it off Friday by seeing The Wrestler which was 115 minutes of fantastic filmmaking. Truly a great film in the hands of Darren Aronofsky, director of one of my favourite films Requiem For A Dream (unfortunately not much of his other work has lived up to that. In the hands of another director, like maybe Ron Howard, I can see how this film could easily have been made about 45 minutes longer and therefore, a lesser movie. The pacing was perfect, the story was dead simple and the characters truly identifiable. If I had to nitpick, maybe Evan Rachel Wood's character could have been a bit meatier and a bit more developed but even that isn't really an issue for me. Mickey Rourke is the best he's ever been and likely will ever be. The fact that this role was supposed to have been Nicolas Cage terrifies me. If that had been the case, I would have never sat through it. Cage has been that character a million times and that fact would have just rolled this movie into the line of depressed characters played by stupid Nicolas Cage. Mickey Rourke is really what makes this movie. It is too bad he couldn't have won for this movie. Interesting gossip - apparently he and Marisa Tomei could not stand the sight of each other and still can't. Also, Lainey was kind enough to remind us of the time Mickey Rourke was arrested for beating the living daylight out of his then-wife Carrie Otis. Interesting considering how Chris Brown's musical career is likely over for doing the same thing to Rihanna but Mickey's same crime has been quickly forgotten and he is now everyone's favourite hard luck story. When you remember that maybe it's not such a surprise that he lost the Oscar? Who knows? Anyway, good on Sean Penn nonetheless. Milk was a brilliant film and a role like that in this current political situation? Timing is pretty much bang-on.

Saturday we had another puppy playdate with our Dogs = Awesome group and then on to The Reader in the afternoon. This film.......sigh. Hard to say. It's a good story, beautifully photographed......and dull really. It felt about 4 hours long when in reality it's a completely respectable 124 minutes. It had me, then it lost me and then kinda had me again at the end.  Makes me wonder how The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is going to be in the hands of Stephen Daldry. That's a jump around story too.  Anyway, Kate Winslet was good. Of course she was good, she's always good. And she finally got the Oscar formula right. 1) Do a movie about the Holocaust. 2) Don't wear any make-up and 3) Age throughout the movie ending up as a very old woman. That is how you do it people. So although I think she's deserving of an Oscar for her generally stellar film background, I think Anne Hathaway was really more deserving of this award. The one good thing about this movie is the fact that it wasn't Nicole Kidman in the lead role which was how it was supposed to be. That fact alone could be what saved this movie for me.

Saturday night I was pleasantly surprised to stumble across The Visitor on the movie channel so I was able to cross that film off the Oscar list too. I really liked this movie although there was nothing overly unique or surprising about it. Richard Jenkins, the guy who's in everything but whose name you don't know, was genuinely great in this movie but for me, not at all in the front-running for Best Actor in comparison to the others. Still a great little movie though. That said, I would have liked this movie infinitely more if it wasn't about djembe drums and drum circles - probably my least favourite thing ever in life is a drum circle.

Sunday we finished with Frost/Nixon which was outstanding and paced like an action movie. Frank Langella totally knocked Brad Pitt out of the Best Actor running for me and if Brad had miraculously won over this guy it would have been a true miscarriage of Oscar justice. In his hands, Richard Nixon is funny, charming, dare I say even likeable and even sympathetic. Such a great film! And so much of it is taken right from the actual transcripts of the Frost interviews because you couldn't have written better material than what is already there. I loved this movie and it had me for every minute.

In other Oscar thoughts, I still hold my ground that Penelope Cruz should not have won for her role in Vicky Christina Barcelona. It was a pretty bad movie with annoying characters and for Woody Allen who generally does write tremendous women characters, it's a big disappointment for me. Seriously, why wasn't Rosemary DeWitt nominated for this for Rachel Getting Married? She was so amazing in that movie and has been hugely overlooked (I do love that she's in United States of Tara though). Boo to that Oscar voters. But yay for Slumdog Millionaire!!! So deserving for a film with so much heart and one that showed such heart-wrenching subject matter alongside a perfect love story without compromising either side. And again, in terms of political and economic timing no film was better placed to be the crowd favourite. When things are bad, people want to be happy and feel uplifted and this film accomplishes that and then some. Plus it had adorable little kids who were clearly everyone's favourites at the ceremony last night.

As for the new Oscar format, visually it was breathtaking with that Swaroski crystal curtain and the orchestra on the stage and the old-Hollywood feel to it. A million times better than the tired old rotating sets, presenters taking the long boring walk to the podium blabbity blah blah. Format-wise, I did like the presentation of the acting awards but they SO needed to be shortened down a bit. Did anyone else notice that they essentially announced each individual presenter twice? I love the idea of the presenters speaking directly to the nominees (Marion Cotillard getting all teary talking about Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway's reaction to being announced by Shirley MacLaine - don't tell me you weren't even the tiniest bit moved). After all, who needs to see the same clips of those people again? You've all seen the movies already. If they could do the same thing but shorter, I'd be all over it. And the Jennifer Aniston/Brangelina face-off? Even I felt uncomfortable. I don't even like to see my exes across the grocery store let alone seated 2 feet in front of me with their new girlfriend looking all sexpottey while I try not to screw up my lines in front of billions of people as they unbreakingly stare at me and dish me out pity laughter. Man.......AwkWard. Good for you Aniston. I would have cried and run away.

my new fave site

My co-worker sent me this site today and I'm totally addicted. It's called I Bang the Worst Dudes (Sorry Mom) and is a site where girls can upload stories about their most horrific conquests. Sleazy? Sure. But it's hilarious and will make you feel better about even your worst experience. Below is are some blog-friendly G-rated samples:

"This trendy hipster douche gave me multiple American Apparel v-neck shirts over the short 2 weeks we apparently “had a relationship” and practically forced me to wear them when we had sex. Not to mention he once blamed his inability to get it up on the fact that I played CDs when we had sex which “really turned him off since CD’s don’t have the rich warm tones of vinyl.” He can go ahead and talk about LPs and skinny jeans with someone else. "

"This guy always made us bone to the soundtrack from the Disney Movie “Aladdin”. Even worse, the CD skipped terribly, and he would stop and throw random objects at the stereo to make it play. After we were finished he would go to my fridge and drink an entire two-liter bottle of pop. Wow. "

"This dude blamed his studies, his rough childhood and most of all his hopeless funk band for not “being able to give me anything,” in bed when he failed to deliver. The only memorable thing about the mediocre sex was him insisting on being called “The Manimal” in bed. Half a year after I gave up on him he started sending me a slew of sensual self-portraits."

8 year old me

A friend sent this to me today saying that he saw this commercial last night and was convinced it was an 8 year old me. He is not that far off.

and it continues...

Ain't it funny how it all comes back to Ryan Gosling and how perfect he is? Not only is he just handsome x 1000,  here's some paparazzi shots of him walking around LA making movies of his pooch and stopping to talk to a homeless man and his dog.  Seriously?  He befriends the homeless AND he loves his dog enough to take video of him walking around?    His band Dead Man's Bones is playing the SXSW Music Festival and we're likely heading there again this year for work.  Yup, my co-workers have their "keep Tara from manhandling the bands" work cut out for them for sure.   Photo from PopSugar

greed

Saw this today on the gossip rags and thought it was pretty amusing.  It's  the trailer to Francesco Vezzoli's project Greed, a faux ad campaign for an imagined perfume. Directed by Roman Polanski and featuring Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams embroiled in a fierce battle over the fanciful scent, the spurious campaign attempts to isolate and imitate the hype created by the promotion of a new luxury product in the mass market.  Not as good as Natalie's take on the dire economic situation but still funny.

saved!

Now I don't know if this is true but let's just say for the sake of cuteness that it is.  Marc sent me this story this morning and as you can guess, it's my new favourite thing.  According to this story, this hungry, lonely and abandoned fawn, whose mother was hit by a car, was found by this squishy adorable beagle and lured back to his house.  Cute baby fawn then followed the beagle into the house through the doggy door and the owners returned home to the below scene.  If I came home to find Sadie with a baby fawn I just might die from cuteness overload.

everything really is about obama...

So here's the news you've all been counting the minutes to hear.  Coming to Britain's Covent Garden in 2011 is Anna Nicole Smith: The Opera.  Yup, you read that right.  According to them, they believe the money-grubbing life of the blonde is "perfect fare for transformation into a piece of lyric theatre, a grand musical and dramatic parable for our times."

They even went so far as to ensure that "it is not going to be a horrible, sleazy evening."  Is that a bad sign when you have to say that right off the bat?

My favourite quote so far about this project really has to be this by a longshot:  "It is a very sad story - a larger-than-life American story, as was Puccini's Girl of the Golden West. It will be a slice of our times - of America in the pre-Obama days."

oscars

In annual tradition, here is my rant on the Oscars.  I've been waiting to write this until I could see as many Oscar movies as I could but I think I've done all I can and I don't think the rest of the movies are going to play here in time to see any more of them.  So here's what I think in the meantime:

Best Actor
The promo-machine that is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is telling us it will be Brad Pitt.  Which is fine.  It was a great film.  I don't think he was the best part of that film at all though but maybe his body of work to date is enough to warrant the guy a crack at the podium for once.   The feel good pick is Mickey Rourke cuz Hollywood loves a comeback of such stellar proportions like his.  Sean Penn in Milk is probably the best pick in terms of the craft.  He's a force of nature and he's brilliant in that film and it's the best thing Gus van Sant has ever done in my opinion.  I'll be happiest if it's Mickey Rourke, or Sean Penn and or Brad Pitt in that order.

Best Supporting Actor
This category will go to Heath Ledger hands down, even if he didn't happen to die last year.  He was outstanding in Dark Knight and even Robert Downey Jr can't take that away from him, despite being the funniest movie character of the year, hands down.  The other actors in this category should not even bother getting out of the pajamas.

Best Actress
This category will probably go to Kate Winslet but it should go to Anne Hathaway.  Let's all appreciate the magnitude of me saying that.  As a rule, I really hate Anne Hathaway.  That said, she was so good in Rachel Getting Married it was staggering.  That film is likely the best of the year for me and I think it's a shame it's not on the Best Picture list.  That movie has a bathroom scene that makes me wish I had a sister, a wedding scene that made me openly cry and want to have a wedding do-over and has quite possibly the most awkward wedding toast I've ever heard.  It is such an honest portrayal of a damaged family that I left that film feeling physically uncomfortable.  This role is likely the best thing she will ever do and if she wins I will be thrilled despite the terrible speech she will likely give.  Meryl Streep?  Sure she can win and it will be fine but it will be boring.

Best Supporting Actress
Again, Benjamin Button is claiming this award for Taraji P Henson and that's fine.  The supporting cast was, for me, the best part of that film. I'd be happier if it was Marisa Tomei or Amy Adams even though I haven't seen those films.  I just like them so much.  The only person who shouldn't win it is Penelope Cruz.  Her role in Vicky Christina Barcelona is nowhere near intriguing enough for me to think she deserves this over any of the others.

Best Picture
At the risk of repeating myself, I say that the marketing machine behind Benjamin Button is hard for any of the other films to compete against so I think the majority of the voters will pick it.  Artistically though, this should go to Slumdog Millionaire in my opinion.  This film moved me and made me love love story movies again, the same way it did when I saw Amelie for the first time.  These are the kind of love story movies that are my favourite.  And the fact that when this film played at the Toronto Film Festival in September it didn't even have a distributor and now look at it???  Seriously this tips the David and Goliath scales for me for sure.  I loved, loved that movie and I'm always happy when the underdog wins against the big boys.

On a sidenote, I'm also really happy that despite all the hoopla about it, Happy Go Lucky managed to squeak into this race with only one nomination for Best Original Screenplay which is completely fine with me.  It was a well-written film for sure, it was just everything else about it that was completely wrong.  I did say this year that if Sally Hawkins won Best Actress for this movie, which everyone was saying she would, I would boycott the Oscars forever.  Thankfully it seems a lot of people felt the same.  I think the screenplay category should go to In Bruges myself cuz that movie cracked me up like nobody's business but it will probably go to Milk.

I think that's it.  I'm not getting into all the other categories cuz my fingers are starting to hurt and I need a nap.

this i can handle...

So I'm not a huge fan of Valentine's Day as I've said but I do like seeing Valentine's Day things that are cute and unique.  Speaking of cute and unique, enter Kate Spade to do it up right.  She's got a pile of e-cards on her site that are just the kind of thing that would make me smile.

weekend round-up

I know I haven't done one of these in forever but seeing as how I spent the last 4 weeks in my pj's watching all 4 season of Grey's Anatomy on DVD, it just seemed a bit silly to continuously update you all on that sweet, sweet action.  But now that I'm back in the functioning world I actually have real stuff to say!!

Friday was the end of my first week back at work so needless to say, I pretty much crashed out like a giant Vegasaurus Rex.

Saturday we had another Dogs = Awesome Party in the glorious sunshine so it was a great way to spend the day.  Tons of puppies running and playing and jumping and being cute is all I need for the day be a success.  I'm so happy these are taking off!  The dogs have such a great time and I like chatting with some new people and getting together with old friends all at the same time.  We're even meeting strangers at the parties who are so happy to have stumbled across a doggy gathering that they keep showing up!  It's so great!  Post doggy-party we stopped at Sweet Nothings and picked up some Valentine's Day sweets just for us and nobody else.    Saturday night we went out to dinner at Ristorante Verdicchio's with my folks and my brother and sis-in-law to celebrate my mom's b-day.  We ate our faces off and I had too much wine and topped that off with a cocktail that I clearly did not need.  Back at home, in a drunken play with Sadie, she managed to crack me in the nose with her head and cause a small nosebleed and now I'd swear something is out of joint.  There's no mark but it hurts like crazy to touch it. Let that be a lesson, don't drink and play with a puppy.

Sunday I think needs no explanation.  I was so hungover I could hardly move.  Clearly I am not healed enough to be able to handle that level of alcohol consumption.  We took Sadie out into the bush which helped to push things along a bit and then spent the rest of the day napping, eating homemade chili and watching season 2 of Dexter.

Today is Family Day here in Canada which means another day of relaxing in the amazingly warm sunny weather with no work!!  Youpee!!!!  Can I get a hallelujah for new holidays????

Happy Birthday to my one and only and bestest Mom!! Lord knows after tirelessly taking care of me these last few weeks she's more than earned the title of Best Mom in the History of Moms. I love you!!

more joaquin

Tell me you saw Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman last night! Sweet Jebus, this dude is so weird.  I know this clip is long but it's totally worth the full watch. This also reminds me why I love Letterman so much - nobody is better with bad guests. The part at the end when Paul Schaffer gets involved is frikkin' hilarious. This whole Joaquin thing has become my favourite celebrity gossip thread to follow cuz it just keeps getting stranger and stranger.  Lainey told a great story last year about having to interview him on a junket and how he was just completely off his rocker.  Yeah.....obviously.

post secret

One of this week's postings over at Post Secret is making me think of my librarian friend Laura in a whole new light...

the mannahatta project

Here's another great thing I found over at Joanna's.  Photographer Markley Boyer created this composite image showing how Manhattan looked in 1609 versus what it looks like today.

Awesome.

back in the saddle

I just want to take a minute and welcome myself back to the blogging world and to thank you all for bearing with me and for sending such lovely notes and comments.  All my pesky hospital stuff is done and after weeks of recovery at home I am finally back in the land of the living.  Slowly but surely anyway.  Life is now moving forward for us instead of standing still and that has proven to be nothing but therapeutic for the both of us.  I am also now sporting a pretty killer scar that makes me feel super tough and cool.

Since I wasn't blogging I also wasn't on the computer except to check my email and Facebook so I'm also pretty out of date on a lot of things including all the latest celebrity gossip.  I intend to catch up though.  Starting tonight.  I've learned that apparently Jessica Simpson is fat?  Really?  I guess that's bad news for me because that means I am also fat.

Anyway, I'm slowly getting back on my feet after a month of couch/bed rest and will be returning to Hot Bunny Radio next month I think so stay tuned for playlists and podcasts soon enough!!

Thanks all!!

united states of tara

So are we watching Toni Collette's new show? I am and I love it! Name aside obviously, it's funny, sad, clever and I'm hooked.  Not to mention it's got dreamy John Corbett in it, the guy Carrie should have married instead of Mr. Big in my opinion.  That's right!!  You heard me right!!  I said instead of Big....

i heart marco

One time in a fit of craftiness I bought a cheap tank top and one of those Tide Bleach Pens and wrote "I heart Marco" on the front of it.  I asked Marc if he would be weirded out if I wore it out in public and he said that perhaps he might be okay with it.  I personally love the idea of wearing "I heart Marco" everything but something like this pin from Day Lab might be less uncomfortable for my partner in crime.  Thanks Abbey.
